THE HUMAN BRAIN ISN'T MEANT TO TAKE THAT MUCH ELECTRICITY
Elle Bishop isn't like a lot of the other Heroes characters. When she was little, her father (Bob Bishop) took her into the Company and tested on her. After pumping God knows how much electricity into her body and wiping her memories clean thanks to the Haitian, Elle was "gifted" with the ability of electricity. But due to the testing, Elle's not completely right in the head. She was diagnosed as a homicidal sociopath with paranoid delusions due to her inability to tell the difference between right and wrong and, thus, how she feels little to no remorse over those she's killed. (Either because of her inability to control her power, requirements of the job or because someone "got in the way".) She threatens and kills people without even blinking an eye.
In Cautionary Tales, however, Mohinder makes asks Elle how many people have died by her hand and she gets incredibly defensive. In the brief moment where she says "How is that any of your business?", anyone paying close enough attention can see the guilt written on her face, even if it's for just a few heartbeats. She doesn't take the opportunity to brag or to even give him a number because she's actually ashamed of how many people have died, either because of assignments or otherwise. Even after she kills Ricky in Fight or Flight and she tells her father what happened, Elle cares. She may not have an issue killing people when it happens, but after the fact there are definitely levels of regret. Perhaps not what a "normal" person would feel, but she regrets her decisions/actions. Not that she'll apologize for them or anything; instead, she'll write them off or get defensive about what happened.
I WAS RAISED TO BE A COMPANY GIRL
Since Elle has never known the world outside of the Company, she's very eager to please them. Of course, that could have a lot to do with the fact that pleasing the Company also means she'll be pleasing her father, which is one of the most important things for her. Her dad is all she has and all she's ever had - at least as far back as she can remember - so she clings to him like he's her world, like losing him could completely destroy her. She'll do just about anything to please him, even if it means disobeying direct orders and tracking down Sylar because no one else can get their hands on him.
HE'S ADORABLE. CAN I KEEP HIM?
One of Elle's biggest personality point is her flirtatious, Everyone Wants Me mentality. She believes that she has some sort of romantic attachment to any man she meets (or that they have romantic feelings for her). It's seen in the way she flirts with Peter (and kisses/touches him), in the way she uses her flirting to try to get information about Peter's whereabouts out of Ricky, even in how she interacts with Mohinder and Noah.
Based on how surprised she is when Peter kisses her in season two, however, it's highly likely that all of this flirting is just an act (like most things with Elle). Considering she was restricted to the Company grounds up until recently in canon, it's unlikely that Elle has actually had much experience. Acting flirtatious is almost a defense mechanism and another way to do her job well instead of who she really is.
YOU'LL GET USED TO IT. AND THEN YOU'LL START TO LIKE IT
Elle is one of very, very few Heroes characters that actually enjoys her ability. It's a way for her to control others, to get what she wants even if people are unwilling at first. She can threaten them or hurt them until they cave, and it gives her a sense of control and power. Almost a sense of purpose, too, because it helps her when she goes on assignments for the Company. Not only that, but the ability makes her special, makes her different from the boring, normal types out there.
In Eris Quod Sum when Elle can't control her power, it's obvious how not only draining it is on her body because of what power she has but how completely uncomfortable and freaked out she is about it. It scares her more than anything else ever has (and, of course, she masks her fear with sarcasm and anger) and she's desperate to find a way to control it. A lot of that probably has to do with the blackout she caused when she was younger when her ability first manifested and what all she had gone through as a child. It's also clear that she hasn't experienced anything like that, to that severe degree, since she was eight years old.
WHEN YOUR MOTHER DIED, YOUR NEED FOR APPROVAL, FOR AFFECTION... IT WAS HARD TO BEAR
One of Elle's biggest defining characteristics is her need for approval. She wants the most approval from her father since he's the only family she's got (her mother died when she was little). Then, after him, comes the Company. She's been a part of the Company's infrastructure since she was little, back when her father (according to Noah Bennet) brought her in to do testing with electricity which ended up in her manifesting the ability of electro-kenesis. When she gets benched by her father, she goes after Sylar in hopes of not only getting his approval/un-benched, but also in hopes of doing something no one else in the Company seems capable of. Then, after her father's death, catching Sylar almost becomes a personal vendetta against him, though she still seeks the approval of Angela - the woman who was put in charge of the Company after Bob's death - when she tells her that "I... We caught Sylar." It's her way of saying, "I'm sorry I lost him before but he's here now; am I still part of the team?"
When Angela fires Elle, it nearly destroys her; the lack of approval and praise that she had been looking for after she caught Sylar (even if it was simply from her frying the entire room while he cut her head open) is bad enough, but combine that with a severe punishment and it's almost too much for her. She feels that it has more to do with Angela's personal feelings towards her (especially since Angela claims that Elle's involvement of the Company was strictly due to her father's insistence) than her inability to do her job. Elle even says then that the Company is all she's ever known, that it's her life and she doesn't know what to do outside of it (which is showing how dependent she is on the Company but also Elle looking for some kind of advice on how to live her life, or some kind of acknowledgement that she isn't just a Company Girl).
NOW I'M 24 YEARS OLD AND I'VE NEVER GONE ON A DATE, NEVER BEEN ON A ROLLER COASTER, NEVER GONE SWIMMING
Because of the fact that her ability was so hard for her to control when she was younger, Elle stayed at the Company her entire life. It wasn't until she was 23/24 that she actually started going out on assignments and that really bothers her. On one hand, she loves the Company because the Company is all she's ever known; to her, it's almost home and a lot of that has to do with her dad. On the other hand, she hates it (though she'd never say that in so many words) because she's been so limited in her life experiences. It's clear how jealous she is of Claire because Claire's life is the exact opposite of Elle's; she has a dad who adores her no matter what, who protects her from the Company and from the life of Specials without blinking an eye and she got to have the most normal life any of them really could.
I DON'T HAVE THE LUXURY OF BEING MORE INTERESTING THAN THAT
Two other very important parts of Elle's personality are:
1) Her reliance on sarcasm. It's a defense mechanism that she uses when she's feeling vulnerable instead of owning up to her feelings. Or when she's feeling uncomfortable. Or basically any kind of negative/potentially negative emotion that might make her look weaker than she is.
2) She's incredibly picky about who she shares her history with, or how quickly she shares it as well as who she feels comfortable showing weakness in front of. For example: Peter, who she was trying to win over into her dad's good graces and was trying to impress because he was an adored, "perfect" child, Elle didn't tell until a few months into their relationship. Even then, it was a quick, sarcasm-filled run down of her life in as brief of details she could manage.
Sylar, however, she wasn't so hesitant to share with because he, like herself, was broken and relient on his powers to feel complete. They shared a bond that Elle hadn't really shared with anyone else before, which is why she eventually forgave and started to trust him, even after he killed her father. It didn't help, of course, that she felt guilty about how Gabriel turned into Sylar, like she was to blame because she was the one who saved him for the Company.
